Mummy (Color) Universal Monsters (Neca) (Neca)NECA's Universal Monsters line has been putting out some great figures, but I'll admit I haven't gotten much of them, mainly because I haven't seen much of the films. I'll make sure to change that, and I recently picked up another figures for my collection. His name is Imhotep, but everyone calls him the Mummy. The packaging is the same as the other monsters, with poster art on the front and figure shots on the back, but it looks good, and there's the usual front flap that reveals a window behind, showing off everything included. There also wasn't a lot of ties to worry about, making the mummy easy to free. The Mummy is the second Boris Karloff-played monster in the line, requiring a lot of make-up to bring the undead to life. He has very dry, somewhat pink skin, fitting for a centuries-old corpse, and the likeness is accurate to the film. You can see some hair texturing on the back of his head, having been covered by clay to keep it down, because no way someone as old as Imhotep would still have hair. As with most of the figures in the line, the Mummy has three head sculpts: one sleeping, one with open eyes, and one with open eyes and an open mouth. While Trevor Grove handled the portraits, everything else was done by Kyle Windrix and Alex Heinke. The Mummy doesn't have a complicated appearance, given that almost all of his body is covered in bandages, but they made sure the bandages on the figure are more than plain white wraps. They have a very light gray color with plenty of wash, and excellent sculpted detail that makes them appear aged. The hands are similar to the head(s), being a dry pink color, and the right hand has a little gold ring, which is cleanly painted. The right hand gets blacker around the fingertips, and I'm unsure if that's a paint error or intentional. All in all though, the figure looks great. At 7 1/4" tall, the Mummy moves much like the other Universal Monsters. He gets a barbell head, neck, and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, upper and lower elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, and ball-jointed waist and hips. The additional arm articulation is there so you can recreate the famous arms across chest pose, and he does so pretty well, but it's not going to look perfect. The articulation is very useful for a variety of poses, and the joints all move just fine. I personally love the head-neck barbell combo, with balls on both ends of the joints, since it allows the figure to look up and down and tilt side-to-side a great deal. I'll admit the accessories here aren't as exciting as what I've seen with the other Monsters, but there's still some good stuff here. As mentioned, the Mummy has three heads that swap easily and create good display options, along with two extra right hands that are a bit more expressive, with a grasping hand that's quite useful for certain poses. Also included as two loose bandages that can be draped onto the figure, and a chest that opens up to reveal the scroll that revived Imhotep. The scroll bears great graphics, but being a piece of paper crammed into a chest means it'll be curled up when you get it out. It's not much, but NECA did put out an accessory set with the sarcophagus and another chest, and I may have to get that to use with this guy. The Mummy is a great figure overall, with excellent sculpt and paint, and some neat extras that can spice up his look on the shelf. If you've seen the movie, you'd know that the character only appeared like this in the beginning of the film, so I hope NECA gets to doing his "Ardeth Bey" appearance that he had for the majority of his screen time. - 11/1/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
