Megatron (Transformers (Super7)) Review
Megatron
Transformers (Super7) (Super7)It's been a good long while since we got the first wave of Super7's Transformers Ultimates, and after waiting what seemed like forever, the second wave is finally showing, albeit through Big Bad Toy Store first. The big player of this wave is Megatron, who I picked up as soon as I saw he was in-stock.

Like with wave one, the sculpt for Megatron is done by Four Horsemen, Super7's usual go-to for Ultimates. S7 doesn't bother to credit them or anyone specific for these figures, so you wouldn't know unless you looked at the Horsemen's site. Anyways, Megatron's head sculpt is spot-on to how he looked in the G1 cartoon, sporting his usual expression showing how displeased he is with you. There's two other heads sporting a sinister laughing expression, one with a weird helmet, and the other with energon dripping from his mouth. Recognize these in any way? They come from "A Prime Problem" and "Microbots" respectively, and this is only scratching the surface of the many deep-cut episode references included with this figure. I noticed the "drunk on energon" head is a little slimmer than the others; oversight by the sculptors or an intentional nod to how 80s cartoon animation could get at times?

Since Transformers are known to usually be giant robots, Megatron stands 8" tall, making him a little bigger than most Ultimates, but not towering over. Megatron's body sculpt is just as accurate as the head, with all the little, simple details from his animation model being present here. I noticed that a good chunk of the figure feels more like vinyl than plastic, which makes me wonder what led to this decision. It's not a put-off, it's just weird to get this on a modern action figure. The forearm gun can be popped off, but the problem is that it pops off too easily at times, which can be a nuisance. The paint is nice and clean, with a small amount of fuzziness or bleed, and Megatron gets a rather neat feature: flip open his chest to reveal an antimatter sticker, coming from "Roll for It."

Megatron moves at all the usual points as an Ultimate, but his articulation suffers from restricted movement. His head is a barbell joint with some good tilt and lean, but there's only so much he can do with his design. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and while the shoulders and wrists are good, the elbow joints are on the upper arm, meaning the forearms swivel, not the elbows, and unlike other Megatron figures (like the R.E.D. and even the Mega SCF), there's no bicep swivel to make up for it. There is an ab crunch with decent forward tilt, along with a waist swivel. Below it are swivel/hinge hips and ankles, swivel thighs, and hinged knees, but the amount of leg poses that can be done are held back by the pelvis being that vinyl material rather than a soft plastic overlay. Overall, he can manage a couple good poses, but nothing too extreme due to the arm and leg limitations.

Making up for the mediocre articulation are the accessories, and there's some great episode-specific stuff here. There's the two extra heads I mentioned, and they swap easily, but is a regular open mouth head too much to ask for? There's a couple hand options too, with two fists, two wide grips, two tight grips, and a left holding an energon cube. Going with them are two energy flails, one static and one with a segmented chain, and they swap with a bit of resistance. The little Kremzeek is my favorite extra here, and he's a cute, but devious, slug figure. The blaster and laser sword both come from the movie, and Megatron looks great with them. Rounding things out are the Pearl of Bahoudin from "Trans-Europe Express," and a chemical flask. The flask is likely one that will go over a lot of people's heads, since it came from a brief flashback in "The Return of Optimus Prime."

Megatron's a fine figure, but not as enjoyable as I had hoped. Don't get me wrong, the sculpt and accessories are great, it's just that limited articulation holding him back. If he could do more with his arms and legs, he'd be a lot more fun to play around with. The two-year wait for this guy hurts given how he turned out movement wise, but it's better late than never.
