Duke (G.I. Joe (Super7)) Review
Duke
G.I. Joe (Super7) (Super7)G.I. Joe has been around since the 60s, but it wasn't until the 80s where it developed into what we all know and love, where Hasbro teamed up with Marvel to produce a comic book, and both teamed up with Sunbow to produce a cartoon. Given that the cartoon often comes to mind when thinking of Joes and COBRA, it's no surprise Super7 picked up that license for their world of Ultimates. I covered the first release in the line, the comic B.A.T., a while back, and now it's onto the main line, starting with the Joes' Sergeant Duke.

I talked about the packaging before, but I'll reiterate here; the slipcover is designed after a foot locker, and is green to match the Joes. The box underneath is simplistic, but the back is very nice, with a computer readout containing a character bio and shots from the cartoon. The tray inside makes no use of ties, thankfully, just using a few bits of tape to hold in specific accessories.

The figures in this line were designed, and presumably sculpted, by Michael Gulen, and Duke's head looks very accurate to the cartoon. He has a chiseled head with prominent cheekbones, and a military-grade buzzcut. Duke gets three head sculpts: one neutral, one shouting, and one talking into a headset. The additional heads are just as spot-on as the default one, and all three portraits are fully painted. The paint work is clean, and it's some of the nicer work Super7's done, thanks to Matty K.

Standing exactly 7" tall, Duke is dressed in his usual uniform. Namely, a light orange shirt with rolled up sleeves, belts on his waist and torso, and green pants with boots. The chest is hollow rather than solid unfortunately, and I've had to reglue it due to it popping apart. Still, the figure feels very nice in-hand. The colors are accurate, but some of it is just molded plastic rather than painted, despite the prototype being fully painted. I would've preferred a full coat of paint, and some wash on the shirt wouldn't have hurt.

The G.I. Joe line gets a little bit more articulation than the usual Ultimate, and while it's not as much as what Hasbro is doing, it's still pretty good. Duke gets a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel biceps, thighs, and shins, ab crunch, ball-jointed waist, and hinged knees. Most of the joints feel nice, and the arms and legs get good range, though the shoulders are pretty tight. Unfortunately, the head is pretty locked down, mainly due to his thick neck, so it doesn't have much tilt. Neither the ab crunch nor the ball waist have extreme tilt, but both work together well to allow Duke to lean forward and back a good amount.

There's a good amount of accessories included with Duke, starting with the extra heads. They swap easily, but the shouting head's socket is too wide for fit snugly on the ball, and the neck is what keeps it in place. Eight hands total are included - 2X closed, 2X gun grip, 2X wide grip for the firearms (with vertical hinges), saluting right, and pointing left - and all swap easily. The backpack, binoculars, army helmet, and sub-machine gun are all based off the original Duke figure from the 80s, and they go great with him and go on easily, but I would've liked more colors on the gun rather than just solid green. In addition to all that, Duke gets the laser rifle from the cartoon, and a walkie talkie. It's all great, but I would've liked some vertically-hinged gun grips for more display options.

While Duke isn't devoid of issues, like any Super7 figure, he's still pretty solid. I'll definitely be picking up more of these, preferably on sale like I did with this one, but I won't mind paying full price for these guys.
