Thailog Gargoyles (Neca) (Neca)It’s been only a few months since NECA dropped the first figure in their Gargoyles line, Goliath, and he proved to be a hit. He’s definitely near perfect in my eyes, with the QC regarding the wing joints being my only complaint, and I was eager to get everyone else they put out. Now we’ve gotten the second figure in the line, and it’s his evil clone Thailog. While he was meant to be released next month at the start of 2022, some comic stores got him early around Christmastime, and I just had to pick him up. Of course, all the bigger retailers like Target and BBTS and whatnot will be getting him in soon. The box here is the same size as Goliath, which isn’t surprising since most of the figure here is Goliath re-use, and while I did enjoy the packaging art used for him, Thailog’s is so much cooler. The illustration here looks amazing, with great details and a thundering background, and I don’t think anything else in this line will top it. Aside from that, the box is collector-friendly like usual, with only a bit of tape and plastic ties to remove. Since Thailog is just a clone of Goliath, it’s no surprise that he uses the same sculpt. Well, most of it. The head here is entirely new, with a wicked smile on his face to signify his villainy. That said, the body looks just as good as before, going for a more realistic and detailed sculpt rather than a cartoony one, and that carries over to the paint as well, with plenty of wash to bring it all out. However, I noticed that the paint on the hair flakes a bit, but it’s nothing too serious. Thailog is just as big as his “father”, being around 8” tall with wings at 11” each in length. Same body, same articulation comes into play here as Thailog has ball-joints at the head, chest, waist, and hips, swivel/hinge wings, shoulders, wrists, tail, knees, ankles, and toes, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows, and a bendable wire inside the tail. Unlike Goliath, I had no problem with the joints on the wings, and they move great. However, if you want to move them up and down, I’d advise popping them out and reinserting them in the direction you want, as turning them on the body could cause the ratchets to flatten out and not support them. Everything else moves great, and the joints in the legs are nice and tight to support the figure’s weight. As for accessories, I feel that what is included here is nicer that what Goliath had. The pair of closed hands is recycled, but the gripping right is new. The briefcase looks nice, and you can open it up to show off the money and keys inside. The real big thing here though is the flare gun. While it also looks good and the extra right hand can hold it, what’s really special about it is the effect part you can connect to the gun and canister. Said effect is about 10” long and has great colors, and the figure can hold up well with this big piece connected. I do wish we had an extra head like Goliath did, though, but I can live. While Goliath was definitely a nice figure, I can’t help but feel that Thailog is even better. The stellar packaging art, nice paint, better wing joints, great accessories… I love it all. The only thing that I feel he needs is an alternate head, but other than that, this is a 10/10 figure. I’ve gotten some impressive figures this year, and this guy swooped in at the last minute and became what may just be my favorite release. Now just to wait and see what 2022 will bring. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
