Homer Simpsons (Playmates) - 9" Scale Rated 3.75 stars by RMaster007 In case you haven’t heard, Super7 recently revealed that they got the Simpsons license, along with the first wave of “ULTIMATES” for them. While it’s an unusual line-up for this wave (only two regular characters and three one-offs), the figures look great and it shows how deep the company is going with the license. But years before all this, Playmates did their own line of Simpsons figures in the early 2000s known as World of Springfield. While the main gimmick with them was that they could talk when connected to a playset, over time I came to appreciate the great sculpts, good accessories, and the many characters it did. Aside from that, they also did a large-scale line of non-talking figures known as Faces of Springfield. I’ve had Homer for a while now and I may as well go ahead and do...[See More]
Rocksteady Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 It hasn’t been too long since the third wave of Super7’s TMNT Ultimates began shipping out, and they’re not just available through S7 and other online retailers, a few comic shops have been getting them in as well, but the only two my comic store got are Rocksteady and Metalhead. Had to grab Rocksteady go with the Bebop I already have, of course.
The packaging is just like what we got in waves one and two, but the cardboard backdrop on the inside is different this time around. Originally, you had to pull that out to get to the figure, but here the top flaps up so you can remove the plastic tray more easily, and it’s a nice improvement. There’s also a single twist tie as well to hold in the figure, which is quite a relief.
Remember how big Bebop was? Well, it’s no surprise that...[See More]
Foot Soldier (Trouble's Afoot) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.90 stars by RMaster007 NECA sure knows how to make the most out of a figure, huh? We’ve seen this Foot Soldier like what, eight times? Sure, they included it in two-packs, that SDCC eight-pack, and even damaged versions, but never by itself. Now that has changed with the ultimate release.
The packaging art is inspired by the old VHS tapes, but this is the coolest looking one they did. A small army of these diabolical droids scaling the rooftops is shown on the front, and it’s definitely beautiful. Everything inside is neatly packed inside plastic trays, and there’s only a few bits of plastic ties and tape you need to remove.
The sculpt of the Foot Soldier here is almost exactly like previous releases, with the only changes in it being the articulation, but more on that later. Standing around 6 ¼” tall, it...[See More]
Splinter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) - Ultimates! Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 It was an interesting choice of Super7 in their TMNT Ultimates line to have one of the turtles themselves in each wave, but even if there’s only one in the first wave, you still got to have their sensei/father figure, Splinter.
Do I even need to say anything about the packaging here? It’s pretty much just like everyone else in the line, and S7’s Ultimates in general. May as well just go right ahead and talk about the figure. The sculpt, much like the other figures, is based off of the original Playmates figure with some updated details. The tail is longer and pointier at the end, much like how it is on a real rat, and the head resembles the artwork on the original cardback more, with more pointed ears. I think some have said that his head looks off, but I think it’s alright. The detail...[See More]
Bloodsport (Masked) DC Multiverse (McFarlane) - Suicide Squad Rated 4.50 stars by RMaster007 It hasn't been too long since DC's latest movie, The Suicide Squad, hit both theaters and HBO Max, and it quickly proved to be a hit thanks to a great cast and a perfect mix of action, gore, and comedy. Certainly a lot better than the 2016 film, am I right? Of course, like its predecessor, merchandise quickly rolled in for it, including some figures as part of McFarlane's ongoing DC Multiverse line.
This wave has a "build-a-figure" gimmick; collect all four - Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and Polka Dot Man - and you can build a huge King Shark figure. You can also grab the pre-assembled Shark himself exclusively at Walmart, but he may be hard to find. I found Bloodsport a while back, so let's get to it.
The packaging is both simple and attractive in design, and you'll know what...[See More]
Mondo Gecko (Shred, Mondo, Shred!) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca) - Basic Series Rated 4.75 stars by RMaster007 It sure has gotten easier to get NECA’s TMNT figures, huh? With the distribution on them having improved along with online pre-orders for certain releases, fans couldn’t be happier. Those of the most recent releases now, the ultimate toon Mondo Gecko and Muckman, got offered a while back on NECA’s online store NOT as pre-orders, but direct stock, and they’re shipping out now from them. I only ordered Mondo and just got him in, so let’s take a look.
Like with past TMNT toon ultimates such as Metalhead and Krang, Mondo uses new artwork based off of the old VHS tapes for the packaging. It looks great and pretty much shows how much NECA cares for the license. As with any ultimate box, this one is easy to open, but you’ll have to cut some tape and plastic ties to get everything out.
Mondo...[See More]
Ghost Face Scream (Neca) - Ultimate Collection Rated 4.80 stars by RMaster007 While there’s plenty of horror movies I love, one of my favorites would have to be Scream. Taking a regular slasher film setting and having the characters being very well aware of the type of scenario they’re in definitely makes for a clever flick. And if that wasn’t enough, a new one is coming out next year and I’m definitely excited for it. It’s been almost a year since I reviewed NECA’s “retro” Ghostface, and I recently caved in and got the “ultimate” version, so let’s take a look at him.
The packaging is the usual fifth-panel box NECA loves, but the art is pretty simplistic. It’s just the mask on the front, and pictures of the figure on the rest of the sides. Keep in mind that NECA only got the license to Ghostface, not Scream itself, so they weren’t able to use the poster for the...[See More]
Butch Coolidge Pulp Fiction (Diamond Select) - Basic Series Rated 4.35 stars by RMaster007 When Quentin Tarantino comes to mind, one movie of his people are most likely to think about is Pulp Fiction. With a big-name cast and plenty of quotable lines, it’s definitely one of his most famous films. The film has received quite of bit of merchandise over the years, including a small line of figures by Diamond Select. While they only made three, the ones they did are still well-known characters, but they go for up to $100 on the secondary market nowadays. Fortunately, I managed to find one that’s been lying in a comic store for what may have been more than a year, and it happens to be Butch Coolidge.
The packaging is the usual type like Diamond (I think used to) does – a big cardback with a picture of the figure on the side of the plastic. It looks like mine had some wear over the...[See More]
Pinhead / Tunneler Puppet Master (Neca) - Ultimate Rated 4.85 stars by RMaster007 It wasn’t that long ago that NECA’s long-awaited Puppet Master figures finally began hitting stores, and it also wasn’t long ago that I reviewed the first of the two-packs, Blade and Torch. While I liked them, I felt that they suffered from articulation issues and a lack of accessories. I just got my hands on the second one, Pinhead and Tunneler, and it’s time to see if they’re any better.
The packaging isn’t much different from Blade and Torch, with photos of the original puppets on the front, and it splits down the middle and opens up like their case from the movies. You just have to cut some tape and plastic ties and that’s all you need to get them open and out of the box.
Let’s start things off with Pinhead, and the name is accurate – he’s got a tiny head. It’s supposed to be,...[See More]
Quint (Shark Battle) Jaws (Neca) - Clothed Retro Rated 5.00 stars by RMaster007 It’s been about 45 years since the ever-famous Jaws hit theaters, the classic thriller involving a group of men setting out to kill a man-eating shark, and it inspired quite a lot of other films with similar premises. Last year, NECA announced that they had acquired the license and revealed prototypes of Quint and Brody at Toy Fair. Unfortunately, Brody got canned due to licensing issues, but Quint was still happening, and he finally saw a release last month. A Bruce the shark has been announced too, but who knows when we’ll get him (I predict next year).
We have a nice window box for the packaging, with reused poster art combined with photographs of the figure. It’s easy to open up, too. Just remove the tape and plastic ties with some scissors and you’re good to go. They could’ve...[See More]
