If there's one thing I can say about sixth scale, it's that it's not for everyone. While there's plenty out there, the high prices of them are a big turn-off, and besides that, there aren't a lot of licenses that interest me. I'm not a Star Wars fan, and there isn't much Marvel-wise that interests me, but one company that does have me reeled in a bit is Mondo. Their TMNT Michelangelo was the first one I got, and now I have a second figure: Catwoman, sporting her Batman: the Animated Series design. While they have done Batman and Mr. Freeze beforehand, you're going to have to pay big bucks on the secondhand market for them, and I don't feel like doing that (yet). The guys over at NECA must really like the “Planet of the Turtleoids” episode of the classic TMNT series, huh? I’m asking that cause this is the third instance of a character from that episode being made into a figure. First it was Kerma as a pack-in with Mondo, then Chrome Dome, and now Dirtbag and Groundchuck. These two were released alongside Wingnut and Screwloose back in November, but were much harder to find. It wasn’t until recently that I was finally able to find them in store. The packaging follows the same style of the other two-packs, but as I mentioned with W&S, the figure images on the sides and back are no longer cropped, and there’s more of an orange-yellow gradient here as well. Crazy how just like Muckman, we got two new Mondo Gecko figures in 2021. One by NECA, and one by Super7. Is the latter trying to compete with the former? I don’t think they are, but their takes were revealed months after NECA’s were, but I guess that’s just coincidence. The sculpt, done once again by Four Horsemen, is an updated version of the original Mondo by Playmates, but very little’s been changed about his design. The only real differences are the lack of the blue stripe running down the middle of his face and the redone skull and crossbones on his shirt. Everything else is still here; the bumpy skin, braces, wild tongue sticking out where a tooth used to be, all the same. Still, it looks just as nice, if not better, than the original. Man, I’m just getting these S7 Turtles like crazy, huh? I’ve gotten almost everyone they made so far, with only three left to get for now. One of my recent grabs from the line is Muckman, and to be honest, when they first revealed wave four, I wasn’t too into him (tentacle beard creeped me out), but following all the praise he’s gotten, I knew I had to get him. Good thing Third Eye gets in Super7 regularly. The box is same as usual, but it’s a bit larger this time around, mainly due to Muckman’s size. And lord almighty, he is a big guy, standing around 7 ½” tall. As far as I’m concerned, he’s not quite as tall as Bebop and Rocksteady, but he’s still a rather bulky figure. Ever experienced that one time when you go into a store expecting to get something and finding something else instead? I recently had that experience again. I went into my regular comic store, Third Eye Comics, to get a Super7 Mondo Gecko. He was there, but I also saw that they got in the Premium DNA Madballs figures. I already fell in love with the line with the first one I got, Bruise Brother, so I went ahead and got one of those instead. In this case, I got Oculus Orbus, the one eye guy. The packaging is the same across the wave, and as I described with Bruise Brother, it’s big but easy to open, you just have to remove a few pieces of tape. A lot of companies nowadays show that toys and action figures aren’t just for children. Whether it’s ones geared specifically to older collectors, like NECA and Mezco, to companies who are doing both, such as Hasbro and McFarlane, everyone’s appealing to the real market for toys (sorry, kids). One new collector-orientated company is Premium DNA, who spawned out of online retailer Megalopolis. I know, I know, Megalopolis was nothing but a scam, and hey, I agree with you, but I’m not going to talk about them here. Premium DNA, which was launched back in 2020, seemed to be going after the more “niche” licenses that are either not talked about much or never got any real merchandise (at least not in years). Just last month, Super7 finally put out the fourth Ninja Turtle (and the second-best one), Donatello. Finally nice to have them all within the span of two years, huh? The packaging is the same as always, so I’m just going to move on to the figure. Donatello stands around 6" tall and uses the same base body as his brothers, with the only differences being the heads and belt. And when I say heads, I mean that we get two different ones just like the past Turtles. There’s the “classic” head, with a wide grimace, and a “modern” head with a closed mouth and an expression that’s generally more stern than angry. Last year, SDCC went on in a usual way thanks to COVID. However, I’m not sure what to really say about it aside from the fact that a good deal of exclusives ended up being pre-orders rather than being directly available. NECA was one of the companies that did pre-orders with retro-inspired Flash Gordon figures and a new TMNT four-pack (like every year), both going up on their site first then both shipping out and showing up at Target around the end of the year. And surprise, surprise, the TMNT set is based off the cartoon, bringing together the Channel 6 news team, and is appropriately titled “The Catwoman from Channel 6”. Man, the first month of 2022 isn’t over yet and I already got four new Super7 TMNT figures? That’s definitely a sign of addiction. I mentioned in my April review that I was waiting on two more to arrive from BBTS, and they arrived not too long after. And then I happened to find another figure at the same place I got April. Time to review one of my latest additions, Michelangelo, the party loving turtle. The packaging is same as the rest of S7’s ultimates, so no point in talking about the same thing, but the sculpt is also mostly reuse as well, with the only differences being the head and belt. Alright, I’ll admit it. I’m not a big Marvel guy. If anything, I’m more into DC. Though that said, I have been eyeing some of the Marvel figures Hasbro has to offer. The upcoming animated X-Men figures look awesome (having only just started watching the show helps), and I regret not getting the Pulse-exclusive Venom. But one that’s been interesting me for a while is the Marvel Legends M.O.D.O.K. I’ve seen him a couple times at retailers, but it wasn’t until last month that I finally caved in and got him. M.O.D.O.K. is packaged in a rather interesting way, he comes disassembled!
