First time work/Maggie Weston WIP in Custom Workstation by TheRubicon

   [Edit]
First, a little story:
When I was a child, we were poor... very poor. So, I didn't have a whole lot of toys. What I did have was usually broken and incomplete from a donation bin, bulk leggo blocks, and the occasional GI Joes in need of new rubber O-rings. So I would make my own characters from what I had by way of cut, glue, swap, etc. But the toy series I really lusted after was Exosquad; we could never afford any. once, just once, I had a JT Marsh Arial attack E-frame; it was missing the figure, missing a wing, none of the accessories were there and the joints were loose, but damnit it was mine. so I mixed and matched GI parts until I had a reasonable facsimile of JT Marsh and I played with it to death! Now as an adult, I wanted to fill ...[See More]

cool work here! think im partially with you and this story...when I was a kid my mom also hadn't the money to buy the figures I liked to have...ok,I had few,but mostly I cutted a pic out of magazines I found somewhere and glued them on cardboard to get my "figures".while that I've always dreamed of something like I'm able to do today.so I enjoyed your story, although it's a little sad...and I really wish all the best to you and your wife, keep it up!

I hope no one minds, but I'm going to use this post to talk a little about my wife. She's got stage 4 cancer. it started off as colon, but it's metastasized through out her body. all of my time now is dedicated to keeping her comfortable and hydrated in between visits to the Mayo for treatment. I'd really like to be working on my customs to help manage the stress of it all, but I can't divide my time. we're cautiously optimistic at this point, but we're also trying to plan for the worst as well. she's mentally strong, but her body is frail. prayers for her, please?
With the cost of oil dropping to record lows will it also lower the cost of plastics? in Action Figure Chatter by riseROBOTrise

   [Edit]
I'll say this - I've pretty much been priced out of the market for toys.

I can't afford to drop $24.00 on a new Marvel Legends or Star Wars Black Series, no matter how obsessive/compulsive I may be. I hate that I can't pursue my hobby any longer. I'm wondering if there are any economists in our group that can explain to me in small words and simple language, why, when the cost of oil went up so did the cost of making toys. But when the cost of oil plummets, the toys are still obscenely priced? Is it simply greed? Is there more to it than that? I understand supply and demand, to a certain extent. What I'm wondering is why, when so many people want these figures, they (Hasbro) isn't making more to satiate that demand? Reme...[See More]

This reminds me of KayBee n how cheap they would sell figs 4. I blame greed . Hasbro addressed their lameass 1st attempts n gave us a superior product- they know that their clientele are adults who tend 2 be hardcore collectors. I get stoked when I se a ML for $10! I agree w/u that they should increase their volume...but it must conflict w/their evil plans smh :{

I definitely don't see figures as "valuable" since I started customizing, at least not when they're straight from the factory. I'm not comfortable spending over $10 for a figure because I'm just gonna hack it apart and repaint it. Would you pay retail price for a bike or a shirt if you were just gonna "wreck" it?

I'm sure complaining about the cost of things is something artists have always done, the problem comes when there's no cheaper alternative and they move on to other artforms, killing the previous artform. Although, in true artistic vision, having something die to give birth to something else isn't a "problem", it's just part of the artistic process.

The only reason I can customize now is because I take commissions, so the customers pay for parts. If I didn't have any customers p ...

Hey all! Back from the dead and ready to party!
It's been a couple of years since I penned anything here. Prices. Have they gone up or down? In my area they've stayed about the same, and on a very rare occasion you can find them on sale if you know where to look. I have been able to sneak in an action figure occasionally if the wife isn't paying attention. ML's on the shelf at Walmart and Target are between 18-24, while Walgreens has a more consistent selection for a constant 19.99.

Toys R Us existed the last time I posted a response here. A moment of silence for our dearly departed.

I'm really excited to see MEGO back in the mix at a price point that makes me almost nostalgic! I'm going to try and pick up all the Star Trek related figures. Maybe the DC ones...I draw the line at Charlie ...

Okay, I'm calling Hasbro to ask. Their number for 'all other hasbro products' is 800-255-5516. I'm encouraging anyone that's fed up to call them and just keep asking the same question - 'Now that the cost of oil is at record lows, will you be setting a price point on action figures that is affordable to all consumers?'
I'm going to call now, I'll let you all know what I find out.

10 minutes later...

Okay, so that was rather pointless, as I expected it might be. I spoke with CS rep named Stephanie, who was very nice, diplomatic, and ultimately ineffective at providing any real helpful information. I did however voice my grievance with her, and she ensured me it would be passed along to the appropriate parties. 'Hasbro cares deeply about it's fans and collectors, and does all they can to keep their product affordable.' Marvel Legends have a suggested retail value of $19.99. It's up to the distributor to determine the cost they mark it at, or which stores carry them, so while TRU typically sells theirs for 21.99 at one of their stores, a Walgreens can sell them for $25.00, or whatever they decide.

Most of the questions I asked her remained o ...

Mystery WIPs in Custom Workstation by Henchmen4Hire
Updated Friday, December 15, 2017
   [Edit]
So mysterious, it's impossible to tell who this will be, dont even try

I'm going to add many of the details from the premium format statue of him. This is one of those things where most of the bod will be sculpted over so I mashed together generic parts.

[Picture]

======

Here I add a "shirt effect" to the torso, so it doesn't look entirely like painted meat. First fill in the grooves between muscles, not much, just enough so they aren't so chiseled. Then make little rolls of clay and stick them across the grooves, imagine they're like bridges. Add long continuous thin ones around the waist if the character is wearing a belt, this is to show the fabric is bunching up around the belt. Use thicker ro...[See More]

That's unfortunate, as you do really good work, but I can definitely understand and relate. I haven't done anything figure-related since about the end of July, since, to cut down on utility costs during the summer, I only run a small window a/c unit in the bedroom, which means my kitchen work space, and the rest of the house, is unbearably hot.

Honestly I'm starting not to GAF about this stuff again

I've been making wrestlers and clonetroopers though, which has been a much needed change of pace

I'm not posting here anymore because apparently comments disappear if you post past a certain amount. Any WIPs and stuff are all going on my Art Station gallery from now on https://henchmen4hire.artstation.com/

Hey, I don't have any extra troops, but have you considered casting your own from resin with silicone molds? I've taken apart a ML Prof. X and cast each part, which was a serious undertaking and a pain in the arse....
http://www.figurerealm.com/customfigure ... w&id=76095

I'd guess that a trooper would be fewer parts to cast.....

Thanks, though I've been getting them from ebay for $12 to $15. It's way more convenient than having to cast stuff and buy all the equipment (and suffer all the errors) associated with that.

Painting stripes on a figure in Custom Workstation by bjpalm1994
Tuesday, September 11, 2018
   [Edit]
Hello Realmers, I am working on a custom that I need to paint white stripes on. What is the best, easiest way to do this? I feel I have a steady enough hand for thicker stripes but for these I don't think it'll work. Was thinking of maybe car model stripes but not sure how well those would work. Thanks in advance! ...[See More]

Hunter Prince in Custom Workstation by Simon Williams
Tuesday, September 4, 2018
   [Edit]
I'm pretty new to this scene, and still haven't done my first custom. One character I'd love to have, who doesn't seem to exist yet, is Hunter Prince, Wonder Woman's son. Which figures would make good parts to cannibalize? I know I can get the accessories from WW herself, but not sure which chest, abs, hips, arms legs, etc. He's only appeared in a few issues of the Rebirth Justice League so far, but he's a character I'd like to see get a bigger role....[See More]

Riiggght. I recommend using a toothpick sanded down to a fine point for the pupil and eyeshine. Do some practice runs on a piece of paper until you're confident.

Isn't Hunter a little shorter than the adults?

He isn't in all that many panels, but he's definitely taller than Wonder Woman. There's one panel where he's looming over her all angry and intimidating. He looks a good 4-6 inches taller than her in that panel. I can't find any panels where he's side by side with Superman; one of them is always angled out in front of the other. But he *looks* like he's pretty close to Clark's height. Definitely looks as heavy as Clark, but then that particular Wonder Man figure is actually bigger than the Superman figure I have...in every dimension except height and chest.

A Marvel Legends Wonder Man would make a great base. It has a similar build, flesh toned arms/shoulders, and the head looks similar, though you could easily mod it.
You can buy it on Walmart.com for about $12 plus shipping.

True. He's a little on the short side, since most of the DC figures are real close to 7 inches, and Wonder Man is only 6.25, but I bet I can find a way to make it work. The eyes shouldn't be too hard to repaint, right?

ML's are DYING! What r u gonna do? in Action Figure Chatter by Redmist
Monday, August 16, 2010
   [Edit]
Actually, I think of ML's(Marvel Legends) as a loved relative who's on life support. This saddens me 'cause this line kicked major @s$ and inspired many imitators and let's not 4get it STILL makes up around 95% of the customs on this and other sites!

I've seen that Hasbro showed off some future 2 pks that look pretty sweet, but 2 me that's not enough. I mean 6 inchers aren't all dying since loads of people are willing to shell $18 on DC figs(Which aren't as nice...imo their molds are 90% identical like not everyone has Supes physique C'MON! )

So on to my subject question: It does seem(heavily) like ML's are dying...what are u gonna do? Cop some more expensive DC figs? Or move on to the hot new (and...[See More]
