ROM - what kind of paint job should he get? in Custom Workstation by riseROBOTrise
Wednesday, December 16, 2015
   [Edit]
Hey everyone,
I've been working on this ROM SPACEKNIGHT figure for a while now, and I'm just about to put the paint on it. I've seen a few inspirational paint schemes on other ROM figures, and on some general pop art figures that I am considering. I tried him out first with a basic silver coat. Wasn't very impressed with the finish it gave me. This was using Tamaya. Testors is my favorite for looks, but it's always tacky regardless of how long I leave it to dry. I've seen some customizers use something called 'powdered chrome', but I've not been able to track down exactly which product they've used to get the remarkable finish they achieve.

So, yep, my first thought on his finish was silver - ...[See More]

Wait, yes, Model Master, doh, of course I have those. Brainfart. You like the silver in that brand? Have you heard of the chrome powder? I wonder if that's the same stuff for powder coating, but that requires a heat treatment of 400 degrees, so unlikely.

Lol

Yeah, enamels react badly (become sticky) on certain plastics.

I use Formula P3 paints because theyre cheaper, but I remember using MM Testors Steel. That stuff gleamed like metal if you painted it smoothly enough, like airbrushing, or buffed it after. Silver was more opaque, milkier, and also had a faint bluish tint. ...
Is FigureRealm Dying? in Off Topic by MercMouth Customs

Anyone get the feeling that the site is slowly dying, what with the cancellation of any further contests, and lack of a real sense of community?...[See More]

I think it ebbs & flows.
Man, I would be hella sad if this were to close down. I've been coming here for over 10 yrs & like Edgy 3, I have a desk job that allows me to visit often. Tjose of us that are aware & "sense a disturbance in the Force" can do something about it. I leave many comments, even if many are redundant. Everyone wants some attention, most want "Atta Boys" & others can appreciate critiques. Le's keep it alive, bros!

I feel that way about the country in general. No sense of community, no one communicates effectively, everyone is off doing their own thing on youtube or facebook trying to rake in ad money or whatever. This site is more like a museum for customs and a repository of information.

Sometimes I leave a skeleton in my chair at the front desk and no one even notices lol

But it's like an interactive museum that everyone can democratically contribute to, however, which makes it special. Nothing is political here. This site is the only 'social media' site I partake in. I only hang out with cool artist types. ...and don't really hang out at all IRL anymore, Facebook killed that.

Seriously, being an artist for me means living in isolation most of the time anyway. It's horrible in the winter, but that's when I get most of my customizing done.

THIS. I am right there with you and am a prime example of ebbing and flowing! I too have been visiting this site for over a decade, but there were gaps where life intervened or I just lurked while I sulked in a creative funk. It's kind of like PBS, you take it for granted. It's always there by the magic of the internet, but no, it's here because of the creator(s), who I think is Capt. Coder, so thanks Cap! It's here because we contribute our customs and content, because we support one another with constructive critical observations that help us grow as artists. I wouldn't do what I do if not for THIS site. If it were gone I'd feel a huge void in my life. I don't show this stuff to anyone in real life, and when I do I get a 'huh, that's interesting.' kind of comment usually. I know there ar ...
How to repair a battery operated DINORIDER? in Figure Realm Comments and Questions by JudiBee
Sunday, October 7, 2018
   [Edit]
I have 3 battery operated Dinoriders - the Tyrannosaurus, Diplodocus and Triceratops. They've been in storage for 20 years. The batteries were removed when put into storage but they don't won't. It must be something internal? Has anyone successfully repaired any of these? Thanks...[See More]

Not familiar with these, but a quick search turned up this forum and topic http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=650.0 maybe there's some info there that can help. Anyway, most of the time, battery operated toys tend to use fragile components, VERY thin wire with bad/weak solder joints, cheap plastic gears in motors and other moving parts which can still deteriorate over time despite how well they're stored. In general, the first thing I'd try is cleaning the battery contacts since oxidation of the metal can still occur. If that doesn't work, check to see if there are any loose or disconnected wires. Those are probably the two most common and easy to address issues, so I'd start there.

Thank you! I'll try cleaning the battery compartment first. They're in fine condition otherwise but it would be better if they still worked!

Head suggestions in Custom Workstation by heatherly84
Tuesday, October 2, 2018
   [Edit]
It's that time again! I want to make a custom of Abby from Santa Clarita Diet (played by actress Liv Hewson). Anyone got any suggestions for a head with a good resemblance? Body is going to be ML White Tiger, so that's the scale/neck joint type I'm hoping it'll be compatible with. That said, I can shrink or enlarge a cast, so that's not THE most important thing....[See More]

Maybe the old Toy Biz Kitty Pride, the head was somewhere between 6 and 5 inch scale, should look fine on the smaller female ML body

something else I've done fixing up my kids dolls is taking the new material, deliberately soaking about a 2cm thick line across the top, folding that under and ironing it, then glued that line to the doll/figure. same as Hnechmen said, just the process. hides the glue, makes a clean line of the clothing, and provides some rigidity for pleats and so on.

Hot glue would be a good solution, assuming you can do it neatly.

You can keep using superglue until the area you're gluing becomes so saturated/stiff that it finally sticks to the plastic. I've been doing that (ModPodge/superglue) with the cloth skirts on Clonetroopers, but I'm definitely looking for a better solution.

Head Casts from Ebay [Quick Review] in Custom Workstation by Henchmen4Hire
Tuesday, October 2, 2018
   [Edit]
I recently found a seller (chric-36) with Star Wars head casts, they have a few 6 inch and 3.75 inch scale heads/helmets. I decided to get three Phase 2 Clonetrooper helmets because I get requests for P2 Clone customs often. As a bonus they live near me, so shipping time is very quick.

The casts are okay. There are the usual pin holes from bubbles in places from not using a pressure pot. Most of the ugly is under the helmets where you can't see it, but unfortunately the respirator area suffers a little too. I don't like fixing intricate areas like that because one of the main reasons to buy head casts is to save time not having to sculpt stuff.

Hey everybody, just found my toys from childhood--Batman--and thinking of doing some restoration. The 84 Super Powers Batmobile has notoriously fragile windows, and I was thinking of trying to find a way to do replacements. Who has any experience in recasting such things and can offer a few tips?
