Painting Vintage Figures Question in Figure Realm Comments and Questions by Frightmare13
Wednesday, January 15, 2020
   [Edit]
Hi All,
I'm new and love the site! So I recently started my own customizing of Masters of the Universe figures, mostly from the original 80s Mattel line. I painted two so far but used acrylic paint I bought from Walmart, which I literally just read on here not to use. I noticed that the paint does indeed scratch off easily. Since I cant' really go back, is there anything I can do to remedy this at this point? I wish I had discovered this site first before I started but better late than never! ...[See More]

For beginners, Vallejo and Formula P3 are forgiving paints. The cheap paints work, but you have to know what you're doing. They need to be thinned a certain way, enough that you can handpaint but not so much that they lose coverage/durability. That's why hobby paints are recommended, even if they are laughably expensive at $4 for a little bottle.

Don't bother with Games Workshop/Citadel, their pot design lets the paint dry out quickly so you have to buy more.

(Yes, it's a conspiracy theory that they do this on purpose to sell more paint, but I think it's fact considering they haven't done a single thing to fix it despite all the complaints.) ...

It also sucks that you can't use Citadel on top of Testors Model Masters Acryl. The paints don't like working together and rub off.

Ok that is great to know thanks! I'm looking into model paints from here on in. My only road block now is what do to with figures that have hair. In this case I have a vintage She-Ra figure I want to change the hair color on. The only result I'm getting that makes the most sense is food coloring. Any one have experience in this area that can recommend a solution? TIA!

I used a dremel and sandpaper. The dremel will speed up the process, but can cause extra work trying to sand the rough parts down. Before you try a dremel though, try using 220 grit sandpaper to sand off the logo, then use 600 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. It might take a little longer this way, but it should save you a lot of work. You should be able to find the sandpaper at a hardware store.

The 220 grit is good for sanding off areas quickly, and the 600 grit is good for smoothing it out afterwards and giving it a nice finish.

so sometimes I look around images of action figures or stuff with an action figure line and I typed in machine empire (cause zeos a cool series :3) and I noticed someone made a custom figure of a character who didn't get a figure originally. long story short Id really like to develop my modelling skills into making custom action figures, mostly of villain characters cause a lot don't get their own figures. id really appreciate any advice be it for beginner or just for hobby purposes. sorry im not good with words but I tend to write a lot, really though id be grateful for any advice, tutorials or just basic tips.

Don't expect greatness the first time out. You can have all the best and fancy tools, follow every tutorial, but customizing is just like any other artistic hobby... you might be a savant right out of the gate, but expect your first customs to be mediocre. Get your feet wet with simple stuff first (simple repaints, simple part swaps, etc) before diving into any crazy nonsense that involves pieces from 5 figures and a sea shell. Also, if you get figures for BaFs or whatever, keep them. You never know when that one stupid Thor figure you've got buried in a box will have the exact belt or boot you need for something you want.

@ themechanicalmonstermaker

BAF stands for "build a figure"...if you got a whole series of certain marvel legends or dc universe classics each figure comes with one or two parts for a big one wich mostly fits to the storyline of the series.you can easily put them together to...yeah,build a figure

DC Essentials: Cracking Torso? in Custom Workstation by TomatoisJP
Thursday, May 7, 2020
   [Edit]
So I'm about to recieve a bunch of figures for what's going to be a rather involved custom using a DC Essentials Aquaman as a base, and one of the big things I'll need to do is break down the figure (I need to swap an arm out and fully paint the thing). Has anyone who has worked with them give me an idea of how tough they are to crack open?...[See More]

Not sure. Is the plastic on the torso hard or soft plastic?

I was just about to post this question - can you make a Shredder head cast? I was looking for an IDW comic Shredder type of head, but the 2003 Shredder head would work too.

Well I hope you enjoy. Check out all the tutorials on the Realm while you're at it, you'll find a lot of in depth information on different subjects. I'll try to answer any questions you can't find as well. Last thing, practice your paints on a dummy figure before trying it on the actual custom. It'll save you a lot of headache and mess.

I use Testor's acrylic paints myself. More specifically I use Testor's Model Master Skin Tone Tint Base and Skin Tone Warm to start. Experiment with adding other colors to those two to get the shade you're looking for. Just make sure they're all Testor paints. I've found that trying to mix different brands of paints doesn't work well together.

Alright, that should be even easier then. Look at this tutorial. The parts probably won't be the same exactly, but it should give you enough info to follow:
