The Human Torch, also known as Johnny Storm, is a Marvel Comic superhero. He is a member of the Fantastic Four, a crew aboard an experimental space flight that was given special powers when it was bombarded by cosmic rays. After the crew learned of their new special abilities, they formed the Fantastic Four to serve mankind and protect the world. Johnny Storm discovered he had the ability to burst into flame by merely thinking it, thus earning him the name Human Torch. Along with the ability to burst into flames, Johnny learned how to control fire to use to his advantage and also learned to fly.
Growing UpJohnny Storm grew up in suburban Glenville, New York. When Johnny was younger, his parents were in a car wreck. His mother died in the accident. Despite being a surgeon, his father, Franklin Storm, was unable to use his professional talent to save his wife. This led to a fight with alcoholism for Franklin, which caused him to spiral into financial ruin. During his struggles, Franklin had a run-in with a loan shark that he ended up killing in self-defense. This landed him in jail, forcing Johnny and his sister Susan to move in with relatives.
During his teenage years, Johnny became interested in cars and became an excellent mechanic. This likely played a role in him joining Richard Reed’s crew on the life-changing space flight at the age of 16. After the space incident and upon returning to Earth, Johnny was still a teenager at Glenville high school. At first, he tried to hide his super-powers from the school and the rest of public as he battled evil foes, but he quickly learned this wasn’t going to be possible. The public quickly learned of his secret identity, along with the rest of the Fantastic Four. After high school, Johnny moved on to Metro College where he met new friends, such as Wyatt Wingfoot, and defeated many villains as he continued his education.
Looking for work, Johnny tried his hand at acting. He landed a part as the Rawhide Kid in a summer blockbuster. However, it was decided that he wasn’t ready for the role and the part was given to Lon Zelig (Super-Skrull). He did work for a few other television shows, but nothing lasted. He also worked for the fire department at various times and became the Chief Financial Officer for the Fantastic Four at one point.
Powers and Special AbilitiesThe Human Torch’s most notable power is the ability to engulf his entire body into flames. When he does, he also has the ability to fly, shoot streaks of fire and throw flaming fireballs. Whether he is engulfed in fire or not, he has the ability to manipulate fire that is within his range of vision. He can shape it into rings or cages, increase or decrease its intensity, or pretty much shape it to whatever he wants just by thinking it. Not only can he control the fire, but he can absorb fire, such as explosions, without causing any harm to his body.
When the Human Torch flies through the air, he propels himself with the thrust of his own flame and can reach beyond the speed of sound. The intensely hot plasma field he creates around his body as he flies vaporizes any debris or obstacles that obstruct his path. He has even been known to vaporize bullets that have been shot at him. Torch has created a catchphrase for himself by yelling “Flame On” before he engulfs himself with fire. When he turns on the flames full-blast, which is extremely dangerous for anybody in the near vicinity, he calls this his “Nova Flame”.
The power of the Torch’s flames is only limited by the amount of oxygen in his nearby surroundings. He also has the same weaknesses as normal fire and can be extinguished by such things as excessive water, flame retardant foams, and vacuums.
