After the death of his wife, Michael Holt fell into despair and contemplated suicide, but the Spectre stopped him and told him about Terry Sloane, who long ago had become the superhero Mr Terrific after a bungled suicide. Holt took the story about Sloane at heart and became the new Mr Terrific.
