From 1965 to 1969, Brisco began his professional wrestling career and won several championships. He won the NWA Missouri Junior Heavyweight Championship twice and also held state titles in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Brisco's first tag team title came when he teamed up with Haystacks Calhoun to win the Tri-State version of the NWA United States Tag Team Championship. He later won the tag team titles again with Gorgeous George Jr.

In 1969, Brisco joined Championship Wrestling from Florida and won the NWA Florida Southern Heavyweight Championship. He also won the NWA Florida Tag Team Championship multiple times with different partners. Brisco had successful runs as a singles wrestler, winning the NWA Florida Television Championship and regaining the Southern Heavyweight Championship.

Brisco briefly left Florida to compete in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, where he won the NWA Eastern States Heavyweight Championship twice. He then returned to Florida and won the NWA Florida Brass Knuckles Championship. Brisco won his third Television Championship and Tag Team Championship with his brother.

In 1973, Brisco won his first NWA World Heavyweight Championship, defeating Harley Race. He defended the title against notable wrestlers until losing it to Giant Baba in Japan but quickly regained it. Brisco eventually lost the title to Terry Funk in 1975. During his reign, he also defended the championship in Australia.

From 1976 to 1977, Brisco wrestled in various promotions and won titles such as the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship in Memphis and the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship.

Returning to Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1977, Brisco teamed up with his brother to win several championships, including the NWA Florida Tag Team Championship and NWA Florida United States Tag Team Championship.

In 1982, Brisco returned to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and had multiple reigns as the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion. He also won the NWA World Tag Team Championship with his brother on three occasions.
