The Manhunters were androids created by the Guardians of the Universe to protect space, but they rebelled against their masters. The Guardians defeated and exiled the Manhunters and created the Green Lantern Corps, but the Manhunters managed to reunite again and became an universe-spanning cult.

A common misconception among comic readers is that all the Manhunters are machines. While most are, several are members of the Manhunter cult wearing powered armor, including both willing agents and mind-controlled ones (for example, Wally West's father was a willing Manhunter and Lana Lang was a mind-controlled agent).
