In 2271 a mysterious and deadly space probe called V'GER was encountered in Federation territory and began traveling towards Earth. V'GER was originally a 20th century space probe launch from planet Earth, to observe other life forms. V'GER was drawn into a black hole and emerged on the opposite side of the galaxy. The mechanical life forms that found the probe modified it to enhance its abilities. Unknowingly, the probe became armed with the ability to destroy the life it studied. Uhura was called upon by Admiral Kirk to rejoin the crew of the Enterprise during the V'GER crisis. Her expertise in all areas of communication science was extremely vital in dealing with V'GER. Uhura was a master of Linguacode, a data language designed to be easily translated by any sophisticated life form. This was used to establish first contact with V'GER. Uhura's service during this incident was highly commendable.
